One Night in Alexandria- A Photo Tour

I was invited to my cousin’s wedding in Alexandria, Egypt in January 18, 2015. Although it was extremely cold in Cairo, the capital, it was warm in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria. The weather was very inviting to take a walk by the Corniche and to have a good fish meal in one of the local restaurants before we head to the wedding party.

My husband and I decided to spend the night in the historical Cecil Hotel in Ramleh Square. It is one of my favorites. The history of the Steigenberger Cecil Hotel dates to 1929, it was built by the Italian Alessandro Loria from Tuscany, having been commissioned by the French Metzger family. Loria built the Cecil Hotel to be a landmark building, with its elegant revolving doors, two beautiful wooden elevators, and its bar, which was carefully kept unchanged since World War II, making it one-of-a-kind in Alexandria. The rooms have high ceilings and large shuttered windows, and the richness of the classical French-style burgundy and gold drapes, and soft furnishings decorating the space give the place an atmosphere of centuries gone by.

Here are several photos I took in the Ramleh neighborhood and in Cecil Hotel in downtown Alexandria

Kempinski to open nine hotels this year

Kempinski Hotels is set to open nine new properties this year — including two in Saudi Arabia and one in Egypt — as part of the group’s expansion strategy in the Middle East.

The Kempinski Al Othman Hotel in Al Khobar and the Kempinski Hotel Burj Rafal in Riyadh are both scheduled to open before the year ends, along with the Kempinski Hotel Royal Maxim Cairo in Egypt. Another hotel, the Kempinski Hotel in Jeddah, is scheduled to open in 2015.

The luxury hospitality group sees the region as a key growth area and an important market for outbound tourism to its properties across the world.

“The Kempinski Hotel Royal Maxim will predominately cater to corporate and Mice [meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions] business, as well as major social events as it will have the largest pillar-less ballroom in Cairo. It will be our second hotel in Cairo and it is located in New Cairo, which is close to Cairo International Airport and the American University of Cairo,” said Avsar Koc, Kempinski regional sales director for India, Middle East and Africa.

Enhanced by strong growth in the Middle East, Africa, and South-east Asia, Kempinski was able to increase its room revenue by 21 per cent in tandem with a 17 per cent increase in total room nights sold globally. The region contributes almost a third of the revenues for the company, which currently operates a total of 75 five-star hotels in 30 countries. Kempinski returned to Jeddah this week with its seventh annual Middle East Road Show, where they revealed that the group had achieved its best financial results in its history in 2012, with revenues reaching €1.1 billion.

“We have turned Kempinski around from an almost-bankrupt business into a rock-solid one with an equity ratio of well over 40 per cent. With a revenue of €1.1 billion, our hotels passed the billion mark for the first time last year,” said Reto Wittwer, chief executive of Kempinski Hotels.

“As a hotel operator, this makes us a strong and reliable partner for hotel investors and owners. We will continue to plan and work on a long-term basis… Our success proves we are on the right track.”

The Middle East remains a key feeder market for Kempinski hotels in Europe and Asia, such as the Hotel Vier Jaherszeiten Kempinski Munich, the Kempinski Grand Hotel des Bains St Moritz, the Ciragan Palace Kempinski Istanbul, and the Siam Kempinski Hotel Bangkok. Likewise, hotels such as Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi and Kempinski Hotel Mall of the Emirates in Dubai remain popular with Middle East guests.

The Kempinski Al Othman Hotel in Al Khobar will have 141 rooms, 57 suites and 20 serviced apartments. The Kempinski Hotel Burj Rafal will be located in Saudi Arabia’s tallest tower and upon completion will boast 300 luxury guest rooms and suites. The Kempinski Hotel Royal Maxim Cairo in Egypt will feature 248 rooms and suites.

Luxor on a shoe string

The small non-star family-run hotels of old Gurna in Luxor in Upper Egypt have always been the choice of travellers, mostly those on a tight budget, who like to spend an untraditional vacation in the midst of the Theban necropolis surrounded by authentic rural life, lush green fields and mountains.

Old Gurna on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor

Old Gurna on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor

Thousands of travellers cross the Nile in Luxor every day from the east bank to the west, wandering around the temples and tombs of the Theban necropolis. After finishing their tour, the majority return back to the east. For those who opt to stay, however, their only choice has been to book a room in one of these hotels scattered around the village.

Most of them are clean, run by locals and are located adjacent to the ancient sites. Some have air-conditioned rooms, others have ceiling fans or have both, some have rooms with separate bathrooms, others have shared ones, some have TV’s and washing machines and others have not.

Marsam Hotel, founded by Sheikh Ali Abdel-Rasoul, who was a member of the clan who helped discover the Tomb of Seti I, tops the list of options. Situated in Gurna village itself, the hotel is situated directly beside the temple of Merenptah. It has a significant history. In 1920, the hotel was the site of the prestigious Chicago House, where American researchers did their studies and practical work.

When the Chicago House was moved to the city of Luxor, Sheikh Ali took over the whole area, including the building of the Chicago House- which turned to Al Marsam, a meeting point for artists, Egyptologists, and tourists from all over the world, where they discussed, exchanged their experiences in calm atmosphere and nice surrounding.

The hotel started with only ten simple rooms in the old Chicago building. But over the decades, Sheikh Ali’s place became so famous and demanded that he had to increase the number of rooms. In 1970, he built a new guesthouse with thick walls of mud bricks, small windows and domed ceiling, following the style of late Egyptian architect Hassan Fathi. This construction style keeps the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter.

Al Marsam is the oldest in the west bank area. It currently has 30 simple furnished rooms and a beautiful garden with seats in the shadow at the center of the hotel complex.

Most archaeological sites on the west bank of the Nile are within a walking distance from the hotel, except for the Valley of kings. The hotel can arrange excursions by bicycles, donkeys, horses, camels and cars to the ancient sites.
